• Abdominal (Complete or Specific)

  An abdominal ultrasound looks at the liver, gallbladder, pancreas, spleen, kidneys and abdominal aorta. Doctors often order it for abdominal pain, gallstones or abnormal liver tests.

• Pregnancy

  A pregnancy (obstetric) ultrasound checks how far along you are, your baby’s growth and position, the placenta and the amniotic fluid.

• Renal

  A renal (kidney) ultrasound looks at the kidneys’ shape, size and appearance. It is often ordered to check for kidney stones, causes of flank pain or urine buildup, and other structural abnormalities.

• Bladder

  A bladder ultrasound looks at the bladder to help find the cause of urinary concerns.

• Pelvic (TA/TV)

  A pelvic ultrasound looks at the uterus, ovaries and bladder, over the lower belly (transabdominal) or as a transvaginal ultrasound. Doctors often order it for pelvic pain, abnormal bleeding, ovarian cysts or fibroids.

• Breast

  A breast ultrasound takes a closer look at a breast lump or an area found on a mammogram, and can show whether it is a solid mass or a fluid-filled cyst.

• Arterial

  An arterial Doppler ultrasound checks blood flow through the arteries and looks for narrowing or blockages.

• Venous

  A venous Doppler ultrasound assesses blood flow in the veins of the arms and legs. It may be ordered for swelling, pain or a suspected blood clot (deep vein thrombosis, or DVT).

• Carotid

  A carotid ultrasound looks at the carotid arteries in the neck, which carry blood to the brain, for narrowing or blockage that raises the risk of stroke.

• Thyroid

  A thyroid ultrasound looks at the thyroid gland in the neck. Doctors often order it to check a neck lump or to measure and monitor thyroid nodules.

• Scrotal

  A scrotal ultrasound, also called a testicular ultrasound, looks at the testicles and the tissue around them. It is often ordered for pain, swelling, a lump or fluid collection, and when testicular torsion is suspected.

• Prostate

  A prostate ultrasound looks at the prostate gland. Doctors often order it for trouble urinating or to check for an enlarged prostate. This exam can be done transabdominally or transrectally, depending on the reason for the exam and how your physician ordered it.
